Office of Public Safety

Department Mission

The Goal of Public Safety is to foster a community policing environment where individuals and the community as a whole can benefit and participate in making a safer and more well-informed environment for all. This includes establishing and strengthening relationships with emergency response teams as well as furthering student involvement and knowledge in community policing.

Hours of Operation

Office hours for the Campus Security Office are 8 am to 3 pm on weekdays to see the Director or Office Manager. To reach someone during these hours for non-emergencies, please call (802) 468-1399.

A Security Officer is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year including holidays and during school closing events.

Services Provided

• If you are locked out of your vehicle, an officer may choose to attempt the unlock of your vehicle. The vehicle owner must sign a waiver stating Campus Safety will not be held responsible for any damage that may result from the attempt. Public Safety reserves the right to refuse to attempt the unlock of a vehicle. Public Safety will make calls for students to appropriate services.
• Safety escorts are available 24 hours a day. You may call (802) 468-1215 to request an escort from, and to, anywhere on campus.
• Vehicle jumper packs are available to start cars with dead or drained batteries this requires you leaving your ID with Public Safety until the pack is returned, if it is not disciplinary action may be taken.
• When locked out of your residence hall or room you may find that contacting a community adviser or area coordinator in your building will create a quicker response, however, a Public Safety officer can get you access eventually. Use the phone provided in each lobby to call ext. 31215, or walk to the office.
• Shovels are available for snow removal around personal vehicles. To borrow a shovel students need to leave their ID with Public Safety, if not returned disciplinary action may be taken. Officers will not shovel out, push or otherwise be responsible for helping with immobilized vehicles. Public Safety officers will make calls to appropriate tow services if asked.

Handbook

Everyone can access the University Handbook. All members of our community are expected to abide by the policies and regulations contained therein. Some of the information contained in the Public Safety website pages regarding policies and regulations has been replicated from the University Handbook. 

Blue Lights

The campus is equipped with many emergency contact kiosks, known as Blue Lights. These emergency stations connect you directly to a campus officer after playing a brief message and will direct officers to the location. Activation of a Blue Light System for non-emergencies can lead to severe disciplinary actions.
